Working with Text: Beyond Word Clouds and Experiments with NLP
Instructor: Anna Nicanorova, WG’11, Vice President, Engineering at Annalect
Workshop Overview:
A big part of the data and some may say, the most interesting data is unstructured text: news articles, blog posts, emails, Twitter posts, log files, and countless other publications. While in the last couple of years we have made amazing progress in algorithmic analysis and display of quantitative data, unfortunately there are few data visualizations that help us work with pure text besides the notorious work clouds.
This tutorial will provide an overview of the latest algorithms and techniques for text analysis and summarization, and will cover the more original and interesting strategies to visualize a document or a group of documents.
Prerequisites:
Basic Python syntax knowledge will be helpful to follow the hands-on part, but not required for the workshop.
No NLP knowledge is assumed.

Player Insight and Community Detection with Social Media – The Sims
Instructor: Jason Park, Data Scientist at Electronic Arts
Workshop Overview:
Social media has transformed in the past decade to the benefit of market researchers. Where users who were once interested in connecting with friends & family through Facebook are now choosing to connect with interests and products as anonymized users through platforms like Reddit, Twitter, and Tumblr. We will leverage publicly available Reddit data to understand the playerbase of The Sims, a life simulation game, by drawing out insights of who they are and what EA should develop next for the game. I will walk through the data utilizing social network analysis to perform community detection as well as inferring engagement and drawing out competitors.
Prerequisites:
Programming knowledge and basics of Python will be helpful to follow the hands-on part, but not required for the workshop.
No machine learning knowledge is assumed.
